TRAINEE ACCOUNTANT GAVE MONEY SHE SAVED VOLUNTEERING WITH ORIGINAL VOLUNTEERS TO POOR CHILDREN OF MOMBASSA

A Trainee Accountant who saved hundreds of pounds by volunteering in Kenya with Original Volunteers chose to buy things for the poor local children of Mombassa with the money that she had saved.

Denise Savage, from Newport, spent 4 weeks volunteering in Mombassa in Kenya, and for a short while at Mount Carmel in Tanzania, in Orphanages, and schools between June and July 2009.

She said that she chose to volunteer with Original Volunteers due to the fact that we had a wide range of projects, and that we were cheaper than any of the other companies that she had considered volunteering with.

Denise said that ‘ Other people were paying 2 or 3 times as much as I did, and they were getting nothing for it in return. This meant that I had more money to spend on buying things for the children while I was out there’.

She added that she had a ‘fantastic time’ , and wishes that she had done it sooner.

She added that the local people were very friendly, would say hello to you when you walked down the street,, and that they could not do enough for you.

She said that it felt strange returning to the U.K as we live in a very different culture where nobody is likely to say hello to you as you walk down the street.

She made several new friends who she has kept in touch with through Facebook, that she would love to return there again, or to take part in another project, and that she has recommended the experience to several people.

Denise felt that the experience has made her realize that you can do something to help if you put your mind to it, and that she can live on her own, and support herself if she had to.

She felt she had learnt a lot from their culture, and way of life, and hoped that by teaching the children English they had gained a better grasp of the language.

We wish Denise well with her training to be an Accountant, and would be very happy to arrange for her to volunteer abroad again in the future.
