Volunteer in Nepal

Nepal Overview
Volunteer work in Nepal offers you the lot from the awe-inspiring Himalayas, friendly people and a magical Kingdom. Volunteering in Nepal enables you to get up close to the local people, live amongst the community in a childrens home or poor village away from the tourist trail and put something back. Whether it is basic English phrases, organising outdoor games or providing the children with new stimulation from painting, singing to drama and dance with an English theme. Whether you can offer the children education during your visit or some happy memories of doing new fun things by taking part in volunteer work in Nepal you will make a difference to the lives of disadvantaged children.
Volunteering in Nepal offers a very hands-on experience which makes it all the more stimulating for the children and the volunteer. You may find yourself story telling with pictures you have drawn yourself, teaching your own version of the alphabet song, teaching songs like head, shoulders knees and toes where the children can sing and mime along , teaching outdoor games like cricket, rounders or volleyball or introducing the children to still life drawing or spelling bee competitions (don't forget to bring everything you need from home!).
Volunteer work in Nepal offers the volunteer an opportunity to try out your own ideas and create the volunteer experience that you want.

Volunteer in Nepal
Sublime, tropical scenery is what awaits you when you volunteer in Nepal. Volunteers here will be at the heart and soul of a small community and can really immerse themselves in the local way of life. Care for the children and organise activities at small, friendly childrens homes or teach English and organise activities at community centres. Stay in awe-inspiring locations rom the steamy tropical Chitwan region, to the grassy plains to the Himalayas. Volunteers spend free weekends to go on treks, elephant rides in the jungle or explore the tributaries via canoe. These can all easily be set up and booked for you by your co-ordinator.
Skills and Experience, no experience is required to volunteer in Nepal. Usually volunteers are placed in small groups so you will be sharing the experience with like minded volunteers. Simply bring enthusiasm and a smile with you.
What's included

Highlights
Live in at a small, friendly children's home
Everyone welcome, no experience necessary
Co-ordinators arrange treks and jungle safaris for you
On arrival
Airport pick-up is provided from Kathmandu airport. On arrival, if you haven’t already chosen your placement, a co-ordinator can discuss the available options with you. Once you have chosen your desired placement, informal training and orientation is provided in Kathmandu for all volunteers, which may last for a day or two. Lengths of training vary depending on the length of your stay.
Food
Although the projects are self-catered, most volunteers pay £15 per week on arrival for their meals. Often there is a cafe within easy reach or usually a town nearby where volunteers can purchase food/ drinks from shops and services.
Accommodation
Accommodation is provided and arranged for you in Nepal. Volunteers usually live together, sharing dorm-style 2 to 4 sharing. Facilities vary and may be basic. One of the children’s homes is pictured above.

Free time
During their free weekends, volunteers usually take excursions and sightseeing tours to see the wonder and beauty of the scenery that surrounds them in Nepal.
Some volunteers also go on jungle safaris and treks. There is plenty to see and get involved in when in Nepal, so you will never be left with nothing to do.
Not on your own
Although some volunteers travel with friends, the bigger majority travel alone. It is possible to get in contact with other volunteers before your travel, and a lot of people tend to do this. They make friends before they leave and then meet them when arriving in Nepal or some even plan to travel together and set this up themselves.
Once in Nepal you will never be alone as you are put into groups and so always have people to support and help you along with the support team and co-ordinators who are always nearby.
Health
At most placements, there is a doctor close by and a hospital should you need the use of one, your host family will help you with your transfer there.

Project resources and advice
It is a good idea to get in touch with the volunteer co-ordinator closer to your departure to find out what is needed at your placement. This could range from a long list of much needed supplies such as clothes, shoes or toys. For volunteers wishing to teach English it is a good idea to buy and bring some teaching books with ideas for activities in and any items you would like to use to teach English with. Flash cards, pre-prepared number and alphabet bingo cards and anything else that may come in useful or be entertaining i.e. inflatable globe, alphabet posters, simple songs to sing along with on your i-pod (don’t forget to take speakers with you).

Nepal at a glance
Nepal is home to both Everest and the breathtaking Himalayan Mountains aswell as steamy tropical jungles where this placement is based. The world's highest (and still growing) peaks are twice the height of the Alps and dominate this small country and it's way of life. Most Nepalese live far from a road and must travel by foot or mule to carry out their business. Here you will receive a smile and the greeting "Namaste!" from everyone you pass on the path.
Nepal has a rich culture and still has a king. Wherever you go in the country you will see evidence of Hinduism and Buddhism. There are monasteries, shrines, prayer flags and temples everywhere. An astounding diversity of animal life can also be found in Nepal, ranging from the Bengal tiger to rhinoceros and elephant. A weekend of activities can include jungle safaries, sightseeing tours of monasteries and temples, treks and even bungee jumping!
Climate
Climate: Nepal's climate varies due to high altitude regions with tropical jungle regions where it is warm all year.
