Rebecca White Morocco

Names of staff involved in your programme:

Abdula and Clare Doya

What members of staff do you remember the most and why?
Clare Doyal – She was welcoming, explained clearly what was expected of us as volunteers and a very friendly person to have around. Amina – the cleaning lady she was brilliant at her job and was very caring towards all of the volunteers and she was always smiling.

What were your impressions of the accommodation?
The accommodations were basic but manageable.

Why did you want to volunteer?
I want to contribute to our small world we live in and gain more knowledge about the culture in the western countries and to make people happy.

Do you feel you made a difference, how?
There is no way i could have made a big impact due to the fact that in morocco the government and society wont change their views upon poverty and the treatment of animals, children and in general the people of their country.

I did however feel a positive feeling as i left the volunteering as just playing a simple game and giving them food water clothing out there and seeing them smile even for a sort while made me feel like i had contributed positively.

What did you do for fun?
I had fun all the time with the people in the Madina village, in the souks trying new foods meeting new people, the list is endless.

When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
I loved visiting the Berber villages and meeting the original Moroccan people that was my highlight and i came average in the mint tea competition.

Who did you make friends with and for what reasons? Everyone was my friend.

What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise, why was this?
The Souks, BerBer villages, the waterfalls, swimming pools. Our Riad no 5

Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers? Please explain why. Yes and Yes!

What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
Go to morocco as this country is one of the more richer countries and prepare yourself emotional before going somewhere with more poverty.

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack? Laptop, dry snacks that helped with budgeting for food costs

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers? Be prepared to do things and find things on your own don’t rely on anyone to arrange things and make sure you’re willing to co-operate with activities for the children etc… it won’t be done for you !!
