TANZANIA - PLACEMENT OVERVIEW FULL

At this rural hospital you can be one of few volunteers to get a real glimpse of life in this developing country helping at this rural missionary hospital in a little visited area of Tanzania.

YOUR EXPERIENCE

Here you will be given the opportunity to get involved with a variety of very different tasks from administration, computer work or general maintenance around the grounds-all areas where help is appreciated.

Based in Nyangao near the border with Mozambique and not far from the coast volunteers will get involved where their help is needed most. English is spoken by staff and you will not be asked to do anything that you have not been shown before or are not comfortable doing.

Current need:Experienced administrators to help in various areas

Requirements:Volunteers must be confident travellers who can approach their volunteering role independently with a ‘can do’ attitude. Volunteers will be working directly under the supervision of hospital staff and must be willing to work cooperatively with other members of the staff team.

There are no organized free-time activities for volunteers at this placement although volunteers can take weekends off to visit the coast and explore the local villages independently or with other volunteers.

Project location:Rural near town with few local amenities

Accommodation:Comfortable basic on site accommodation

Meals:Can be provided or self-catering

Working hours:Variable depending on area of work, Monday-Friday

Minimum stay:3 weeks+ , longer recommended due to need and travelling times to hospital

When to apply:By end August 2010

By end November 2010 for Summer 2011 departures

Costs:Approx £85 per week accommodation only

Approx £35 per week for meals

Getting there:Usual route for experienced overlanders: flight to Dar es Salaam then bus to Nyangao

Or flight to Dar es Salaam, internal flight to

Mtwara or Lindi (Precision Air) and pick-up/drop off (from Lindi approx. £15/Mtwara approx £26)

Only in Tanzania will you find such an incredible diversity of landscapes from herds of antelope on the Serengeti plains to brilliant coral in turquoise seas.

Not to missed: the magical spice island of Zanzibar, Serengeti NP, Ngorongoro Crater, Mt Kilimanjaro, Olduvai Gorge, Lake Manyara NP, Rift Valley Escarpment, tea estates in the south and Isimila Stone Age site.
