Melissa Read – Peru

Why did you want to volunteer?

I had been planning a trip around south america for awhile but it was too expensive to travel everywhere so I thought volunteering would be a good option to stay longer and see more in one place.

Do you feel you made a difference, how?

Yes we helped the children in lots of ways with their english and doing art projects with them, it was a great experience and they were so lovely.

When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?

The inca trek was incredible and not something I had planned to do before I went.

Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers?

I would like to see other countries but not sure yet when I will be able to travel again.

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?

Art and craft materials for the girls, they love them and really enjoy making things. I think the boys are always in need of footballs and picture books for boys. I took my younger brother’s Guiness book of records with me and they really enjoyed looking at that.

How much money would you suggest you take per week?

£30 – £60 would be plenty. My trek was round £200.

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?

You need to approach the children and make friends as they can be a bit shy and come over to you if you don’t.
