Guatemala offers two very different conservation projects so you can experience the best of Central America whilst safeguarding the future of threatened species.

Volunteers can choose to work on one of two well established projects at a lakeside animal refuge or on the Pacific Coast, making our projects an exciting combination of two very different locations.

By choosing to be an animal refuge volunteer, you will be helping to feed and care for the parrots, macaws, howler monkeys and ocelots which were seized from smugglers and need considerable care and attention. Volunteers also help out by preparing meals. Although the working day is a long one, it includes a lengthy afternoon siesta. It is not all work and no play either, and you will have time to visit the nearby towns.

You could also volunteer on the Pacific coast as a coastal ecology volunteer. You could be performing night patrols and assisting turtle hatchlings to be released, or constructing new facilities, organising environmental education, or assisting with a caiman and iguana breeding programme.

Get involved with community projects to improve local living conditions. Volunteering in Guatemala is not without its challenges on this remote windswept stretch of coast, but being a volunteer on the Pacific Coast could be just the project to shake off the cobwebs.

The setting for your placement in the interior is a 45 hectare lake side forest only 25 miles from the world famous Mayan ruins of Tikal. Long, thin dugout canoes still glide back and forth between the villages, ferrying locals around.

The coastal placement is based on the pacific coast known as the the ‘Costa Sur’. This coastal region is a South Sea paradise, where you can string up a hammock and spend a lazy afternoon doing nothing except taking it all in.

If you want to learn Spanish by working alongside Spanish speaking staff and local people, and would like a comfortable introduction to living and working in Latin America, volunteering in Guatemala is for you!

Canoes, mountain lakes, jungles, tropical beaches and a population that is mostly of Indian descent combine to make Guatemala a unique destination. The main attractions are the ruined Mayan cities overgrown by jungle, laid back Livingstone on the Caribbean coast, smoking volcanoes, isolated lakes, the white sands of the Atlantic coast, the dark volcanic beaches of the Pacific, the spectacular little-known ravines which crisscross the country such as the Rio Dulce among a long list of other attractions.

Volunteer Peru https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-peru/ https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-peru/#comments Sun, 02 Jan 2011 06:55:22 +0000 kris https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/?p=401 volunteers in Peru

Do you want to give your time to something worthwhile in a beautiful country in South America? Then come and volunteer in Peru and assist at an orphanage in Cuzco!  One day you might be helping with homework after school, another day you might be watching TV with the children or organising some activities for them.

The orphanage provides a bed and daily meals for the children, who need supervising at all times and one-to-one attention. If you volunteer in Peru, you can know you are making a difference in the lives of these precious little ones!

When you are not working, in Cuzco there are plenty of museums, shops, cafes and bars (including a growing number of Irish pubs!) for you to enjoy. Not to be missed before leaving are Machu Pichu, the Inca Trail, Nazca Lines, Chan Chan, The Cordillera Blanca and Lake Titicaca.

Peru has it all – from the jungle, to the mountains, to the coast, a vast country rich in history and full of interesting things to discover! Peru’s climate is very diverse, from subtropical on the coast to the Equatorial climate present in the eastern lowlands. The rainy season is from November to April and the average highest day time temperature in Cuzco is 21 degrees Celsius between October and March.

Volunteers live in comfortable shared self-contained apartments above the orphanage. Although there is only one English-speaking manager, orphanage staff is used to working alongside volunteers of all ages. In addition, by living on site, volunteers are never far away from assistance if they require it. No prior knowledge of Spanish is necessary and classes can be arranged for you while you are there if you are interested in learning this beautiful language.

What are you waiting for? Come and volunteer in Peru for the experience of a life-time!

Volunteer Ecuador https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-ecuador/ https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-ecuador/#comments Wed, 22 Dec 2010 08:18:44 +0000 kris https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/?p=379 volunteers in Ecuador

Come and volunteer in Ecuador – we have a choice of projects and innumerable opportunities off the beaten tourist trail. After your arrival you will have time to settle in to this incredible country of lush subtropical valleys and snow-capped volcanoes.

Volunteering in Ecuador starts with an informal chat with the programme coordinators when you arrive in Quito, to match up your preferences from the options available from the very long list of projects throughout Quito and Ecuador. Ecuador is flexible and new placements can be easily added on or changed as you gain in confidence and are ready to move on, although most voluntary work in Ecuador usually starts with a project or two in Quito. Maybe you will start teaching English to some of the poorest children there, or perhaps you would like to get involved with a music, art or dance based project.

Spanish classes can be provided upon arrival in the capital for those who want to brush up on the language. For longer stay volunteers, with some basic Spanish, there is the opportunity to move on to more remote projects following the first one – from coastal conservation to Indian jungle communities. Our projects are the ideal option to access a softly structured flexible programme for anyone who does not want to have it all mapped out before they arrive. You can create your own experience as you gain in confidence and look for fresh adventures with the assistance and support of the local placement organisers.

Volunteering is ideal for you if you are considering a long stay but are unsure about committing before departure, if you want to improve your Spanish and if you want more varied volunteering options other than just teaching. It is also possible to combine your trip with other South American projects.

Ecuador sits astride the equator in South America. Its relatively tiny size belies its staggering geographical diversity – from the heights of the snow-capped Andean peaks down to the remote Amazon rainforest. The landscape is complemented by the colourful textiles and traditional costume still worn by rainforest Indians and highlanders alike.

Ecuador is compact and easy to get around. While not all roads are paved, they are almost invariably scenic and interesting. Why not come and experience all this for yourself?

Volunteer Mexico https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-mexico/ https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-mexico/#comments Sun, 21 Nov 2010 08:44:29 +0000 kris https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/?p=396 volunteers in Mexico

Come and volunteer in Mexico! There are lots to choose from – in Puerto Vallarta you can help local staff look after over fifty children in this stunning location. Alternatively you can choose the beautiful Yucatan peninsula and volunteer with children there.

Mexico is a land of contrasts, a developing country, yet one of the fastest growing economies in the world. Attractions include ancient Aztec and Mayan cities, Spanish colonial architecture, the Copper Canyon railway, fabulous beaches, cheap tequila and bustling markets selling local handicrafts.

When you are not busy volunteering, you can enjoy affordably priced activities such as guided hikes, horse riding, scuba diving, kayaking snorkelling, whale watching and swimming with dolphins.

If you love children and would like to offer your time as a volunteer, then our projects are ideal. Our volunteers in Mexico teach English in a variety of locations – from soup kitchens to orphanages and community centres in and outside the colonial city of Merida. Some of the children have special needs and require help with stimulating activities and physiotherapy. They need help with mobility and lots of loving attention!

No experience is needed and you don’t need to speak Spanish! In fact it is better if you don’t! These children want to hear you speaking English all the time and are eager to learn whether by singing pop songs, reading or drawing pictures together.
Placements are organised by the coordinator according to local demand and group preferences. Friends/couples and small groups are always placed together. Volunteers are introduced to their placement and shown how to get there. Once settled in, volunteers travel together to their placements.

Volunteers in Mexico can also enjoy swimming in the sunken caves, called ‘cenotes’ and/or climbing the Mayan pyramids. Volunteers with plenty of time are recommended to allow a week or two at the end of their stay to visit everything there is to see. Some volunteers have even headed down to Belize and tours can be organised easily through local tour operators in Merida. The coordinator will give you lots of ideas.

Spanish classes can be arranged after arrival by the coordinator and cost approximately £5 per class. Classes can be organised around your volunteering so you can get on with both at the same time.

If you want to try English teaching for the first time, volunteering in Mexico is perfect for you! You will also arrive home afterwards with greater self-confidence and some new skills!

If you want to be able to try out your own ideas and have fun with the children and you are looking for a location which offers plenty of sightseeing opportunities, volunteering in Mexico is perfect!

Volunteer Honduras https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-honduras/ https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-honduras/#comments Wed, 20 Oct 2010 08:34:33 +0000 kris https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/?p=393 volunteers in Honduras

Volunteering in Honduras offers it all: worthwhile environmental work, guaranteed sun, island location, azure sea and white sandy beaches in a little visited corner of the Caribbean.

The placements where you will be volunteering are located on the Bay Islands just off the Honduran Caribbean coast and offer a variety of projects. The placement could involve showing visitors around the centre, environmental education with small groups of local children, animal care, gardening, station maintenance or trekking in the mangrove swamps monitoring the indigenous iguana population. Volunteering is flexible and the pace of island life is reassuringly slow.

If you want a great experience combined with guaranteed sunshine in a paradise location, come and volunteer in Honduras!

If you have an interest in environmental conservation or animal care and you want to be one of the few to experience life on the tropical Bay Islands is for you!

Honduras is a country of contrasts, from the mountain ranges that cover over 80% of the country to the flat coastal areas. The people are calm and friendly. The Bay Islands (where this placement is located) are made up of Roatan, Guanaja, Utila and smaller cays which for over 300 years were witness to slave raids and piracy before trade in bananas and other fruit was established. Today the islanders are mostly fishermen and merchant seamen who can spend long periods away from their families and paradise home.

The dominant language of the Bay Islands is still English and many locals tend to see themselves as English or American rather than Honduran. Roatan is the biggest island and has a substantial town, airport, fishing villages, a cinema, hotels and excellent beaches popular with tourists. Guanaja, covered in pine-covered mountains, waterfalls, beautiful beaches and numerous reefs is the most easterly island and measures only 21 square miles. Utila is a sleepy little island surrounded by beautiful beaches and was the original site of the first banana and fruit plantations in the Bay Islands. The main town is East Harbour and accommodation is limited. This is the location of the conservation centre and where volunteers will be living and working.

Away from your volunteer work, this small island also offers cafés and bars to relax in and recreational sports. Deep sea fishing, kayaking, snorkelling and diving are popular pastimes and can be easily organised.

Everyone is welcome here and you do not need any previous experience to be a volunteer in Honduras – just a willingness to have a go and help protect the iguana’s natural habitat. Come and take part in this exciting project, away from the hustle and bustle on this tiny tropical island. Spaces are limited on this ever popular project so early booking is essential to reserve your bed in paradise. See you soon!

Volunteer Costa Rica https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-costa-rica/ https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/destination-guides/volunteer-costa-rica/#comments Sat, 18 Sep 2010 08:23:31 +0000 kris https://www.originalvolunteers.co.uk/blog/?p=385 volunteers in Costa Rica

Volunteering in Costa Rica offers you the chance to make a real difference in an incredible country not far from some of Central America’s best beaches and where voluntary assistance is appreciated.

Come to Costa Rica and experience a cultural home stay with a typical Costa Rican family, whilst taking part in one of our exciting projects. There are several options to choose from. The preferred two areas are: assisting at a girl’s refuge where you can organise art/craft activities, teach English and help with daily chores and assisting at a day nursery where you can look after children aged up to the age of 7, changing nappies, playing, and helping with meals. Volunteering in Costa Rica could also throw up new opportunities once settled in and see you move from your initial base onto conservation and sea turtle projects.

Volunteers usually spend their free time with their host family, enjoying parties, shopping and practising their Spanish. Costa Rica is a small country and most tourist sights are easily accessible. Tourists are well catered for and transport links are good. Costa Rica is the best choice for anyone wanting to create a unique volunteer experience entirely of their own.
Longer stay volunteers may be interested in joining coastal ecology projects for a couple of weeks or more which focus on beach cleaning, conservation education and cultural exchange.

Weekends are free (and occasional days off midweek according to schedule) to explore this small but diverse tropical country either on your own or using organised excursions arranged by the coordinator.

Come and volunteer in Costa Rica if you want the challenge of being submersed in a completely different culture, want to get ‘stuck in’ amongst local people with the opportunity to gain self-confidence and develop new skills.

If you want to improve your Spanish or learn some Spanish from scratch and use it whilst in Costa Rica, we look forward to meeting you! (Classes can be arranged on arrival)

Costa Rica is a tiny Central American country straddling the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. There is a sophisticated, conservation-minded tourist infrastructure with a well-developed network of national parks.

Active travellers can surf, hike, snorkel and spot wildlife for starters. The incredibly varied topography means you can cruise the cloud forest one day, visit an active volcano the next, and finish relaxing on a hot sandy beach. Trees laden with orchids are home to quetzals and over fifty species of hummingbird. Peaceful, democratic Costa Rica is the ideal destination for independent travellers looking for a spot of adventure.

With so much on offer, what are you waiting for? Come and volunteer in Costa Rica
