Volunteer stays on in Peru

A Student from Yorkshire who had a ‘fantastic time’ volunteering abroad in Peru praised Original Volunteers for being ‘well organised’ and reasonably priced.

Emma Burrett from Hull had wanted to volunteer abroad, but found that many companies were too expensive to travel with. When she discovered Original volunteers through an internet search she was amazed, but a little bit wary at first as we were so much cheaper than all of the other companies that she had read about.

After a short deliberation she decided to travel with the company in July of 2008 to Peru to volunteer at the Elim Orphanage in Cusco, and experience that she described as ‘fantastic’ and ‘brilliant’.

She praised Original Volunteers for being ‘well organised’ said that she had a ‘great time’ and was impressed with the trips that were organised, especially to Lake Titicaca. She made several friends during her two week stay, and described the people of Peru as ‘ welcoming and wonderful’. She found her time there to be ‘eye opening’ due to the level of poverty, but felt that by volunteering you can ‘ see a country for what it is’. She felt that this had been a ‘real life experience’, and added that it took a short while to acclimatise to being in the country.

Having studied Spanish to degree level she was able to converse with people, but she was impressed that Spanish lessons were available for the volunteers. She also enjoyed taking part in Salsa dance classes, and learning to cook Peruvian food.

Asked if she would like to return she would, but feels that it may be a one off experience as she would also like to volunteer in Mexico, and Costa Rica, but added that she would definitely recommend the experience, and Original Volunteers.

Should Emma wish to return to South America again to volunteer abroad we would be more than happy to arrange for her to do so, and we are delighted to hear that she was so full of praise for the work that we carry out.
