What members of staff do you remember the most and why? Florence our housekeeper – very friednly and a great cook!
Why did you want to volunteer?
I wanted to experience a different culture and wanted to give something back to the world.
Do you feel you made a difference, how?
I feel I helped but I know that there is still more I could do
What did you do for fun?
During the evenings we played games, such as cards and charades. At the weekend we travelled to Cape Coast where we visted a slave castle, a monkey sanctuary and a National Park. We also went to a bead market and swam under a waterfall in Lake Volta!
When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
The whole trip was enjoyable, I have so many memories it’s hard to choose a favourite moment!
Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
I feel I made friends with the majority of the volunteers living in the Asaka House. I became especially close to the six volunteers taht Amanda and I met in Accra.
What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise, why was this?
Fred’s – nice food, chilled lager and great music!
Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers? Please explain why.
Yes, I would love to go back! But I also want to visit other countires and experience different cultures, I also want to meet more amazing people and have another fantastic adventure!
What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
Do it!! It’s a life changing, humbling experience. You have to put in as much as tiy want to get out.
What items would you suggest future volunteers pack? Hand/face wipes, torch, hand sanitizer, imodium tablets, and snacks like crisps and ceral bars, oh and dry shampoo too!
Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
Fully embrace their culture.
