Samantha Alloway Morocco

What members of staff do you remember the most and why?

Abs – talked and joked with the volunteers
Amina, the cleaner – she was extremely friendly and our communication was a mixture of English and my attempted French

What were your impressions of the accommodation?
It was bigger than I expected, and the bedrooms were a good size

Why did you want to volunteer?
I wanted to help people that were less fortunate than myself.

Do you feel you made a difference, how?
I think so because the children’s faces were happy and they had a lot of fun. That sort of interaction is beneficial for any child.

What did you do for fun?
Exploring the souks with other volunteers and going to the Hamam

When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
Myself and some other volunteers decided to go to a public hamam to try and get the full Moroccan experience. We had our bikini tops flung off and we were scrubbed within an inch of our life. Then we had big buckets of water thrown with force over us. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed so much (obviously that was after we had left).
In terms of volunteering, I think taking the summer camp kids to a beach and playing with them in the freezing sea.

Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
Volunteers on the same floor, as in general they were more friendly! A few volunteers that came on my last week, who were ground floor, did end up joining our group to socialise too. Age was not important.

What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise
It would probably be the hotel swimming pool as there weren’t many other people using it, and there were lots of chairs to sit and relax and chat. We spent a lot of time in the lounge, where it was comfortable, or on the riad roof, where it was coolest in the evening.

Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers?
Yes I might go again with Original Volunteers because I had so much fun and found the experience rewarding.

What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
There will be a lot of empty time to fill as most projects last about 2 hours so take a book or music.

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
Wet wipes.
Face paints.
Skipping rope and Frisbee.

How much money would you suggest you take per week?

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
There were less projects available as it was August, so if you’re planning to go for 2/3 weeks, if you can, it is better to go out of summer to get more variety. The trips are tempting so put aside extra money for these. Also, you have to pay for transport for projects, which is roughly 6 dirham single.
