Marco Gorellia – Ghana
Names of staff involved in your programme:
What were your impressions of the accommodation?
Good enough to stay in, certainly not an issue.
Why did you want to volunteer?
To travel, learn, mature and help.
Do you feel you made a difference, how?
I insisted on teaching math (fractions in particular) and insisted a long time on the same concept until they got it, so yes.
What did you do for fun?
Teaching was the best, but that’s because I came prepared.
When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
I taught one class a mathsy/logical game called Nim, and the next week a volunteer sent me a picture of a letter a girl had written saying “my favourite games are buzz and Nim”
Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
There are a lot of experiences to talk about so making friends is easy.
Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers? Please explain why. Definitely, it really changed my life. I’ll go for longer next time.
What items would you suggest future volunteers pack? My luggage got lost and I only got it in my last week. I managed fine; you can buy most essentials there.
Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
Teaching is the most rewarding. Avoid arty stuff as loads of people do that already; focus on teaching the English language and maths.
