Volunteers

Sophie Donald Morocco

What members of staff do you remember the most and why?

I remember Fatima well as she was always very caring and made sure we were okay. She took us to the hammam one day because we said we wanted to go and that was a lot of fun.

Why did you want to volunteer?
For the experience and to see another culture.

Do you feel you made a difference, how?
With the feeding projects I did feel like I made a difference because they really wanted the food

What did you do for fun?
We went to the sahara desert, waterfalls and berber house which was great.

When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
The Berber House was a really good experience for me. The family was so welcoming and it was a nice relaxed atmosphere. Ken, our co-ordinator made the experience for us. He was very funny and helpul too.

Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
I came with a friend but made good friends with the whole of my riad.

What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise
Our house was a generally a good place to socialise because there was a nice open living area we could sit around.

Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers?
I would definitely consider going again next year to another project as I made so many good friends that I still talk to now. It was better than a normal holiday.

What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
You have to be very patient in Morocco as the majority of the time you are just sitting waiting for things to happen

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
More vest tops rather than long sleeved turtle necks that we were suggested to bring which we never had to wear,

How much money would you suggest you take per week?
100 Dirhams

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
Possibly go when it isn’t ramadam because everything started to open properly when we were leaving
