Olivia Williams – Ghana

Names of staff involved in your programme:

Rebecca and Fred

What members of staff do you remember the most and why? Rebecca for getting us settled and welcoming me the morning after I arrived. Fred for taking me to my medical placement and being that supportive figure for the 4 weeks I was there. Domonic my house keeper too, he made the experience fun and was very supportive.

What were your impressions of the accommodation?
Very good, it was not luxury but it did the job and enabled me to see things from a different point of view. It also made me appreciate what I have at home.

Why did you want to volunteer?
It was part of my university course to have experience in nursing in another country. So I thought volunteering would not just do that but give me a different experience in life too.

What did you do for fun?
I went sightseeing on the weekends as I worked during the week. I went to see the slave castle, done a canopy walk, went to the Rastafarean village (that was fantastic), went to lake Volta, stayed on the coast for my last weekend before flying home.

When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
The best experience was doing a giveaway were we brought water pumps, cloths, food and other objects to give away to a poorer village. They were shown how to use the water pumps and then we were shown the state of the water they use to cook and drink and where they get it from

Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
I made many friends e.g. other volunteers within my house. I also made friends with the locals and when i went away on weekends. We kept their contact details and will help them by sending money over to them every so often to help them out.

What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise, why was this?
Vibz bar and internet cafe and Cabes restaurant and bar

Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers? Please explain why.
Yes I really enjoyed the experience and would like to do this again soon. This would help me to see how other live and give a helping hand to those who need it.

What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
Yes I would recommend it to others as I enjoyed it and felt comfortable in my surrounding, everyone was very welcoming too.

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
Food, defiantly food, and any old items you may no longer want and can give away. Also bobbles for the girls and footballs for the boys they love those stuff.

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
Have fun and be safe. Don’t hold back and take all sensible opportunities.
