Olivia Haworth Morocco
What members of staff do you remember the most and why?
Amina the cleaner, crazy but lovely; the very helpful and welcoming transfers guy
What were your impressions of the accommodation?
Better than I was expecting
Why did you want to volunteer?
To make a sustainable difference.
What did you do for fun?
Sightseeing in Marrakech
When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
I managed to go to the girls’ orphanage morning and afternoon of the same day and the bond formed with the girls in just a few hours was amazing, would love to return to one project more often. Teaching a little girl to recognise a few letters from the English alphabet was fun, she was so keen to learn even when everyone else was playing games.
Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
Other volunteers were so friendly and i made friends with lots of people, some of whom i still talk to months later.
What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise
The riad, because everyone passes through!
Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers?
Already planning a trip to south America with original volunteers! It was a great experience, i thought some aspects could be better but as there’s no way i could afford another company, value for money is great and it’s the best way i can help beyond the UK. For now.
What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
It’s a rewarding experience but make sure you’re prepared for different living conditions, the occasional stress of living in a house full of strangers, and sometimes feeling like you’re not making a big enough difference. It’s worth giving it a go though.
What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
Plenty of fun stuff for the kids, not stuff which requires a great deal of explanation since getting your point across can prove difficult. Not much point bringing food since everything’s very cheap over there.
How much money would you suggest you take per week?
I managed on £150 for two weeks but didn’t go on day trips, only paid entrance for sights within walking distance.
