What members of staff do you remember the most and why?
All of the staff were so memorable, everyone couldn’t do more for you if they tried, they were very helpful and extremely friendly, I got on with Abdellah (Abs) very well, he organised all of the trips we went on for us, helped us with the volunteering, made us feel really comfortable and most of all we befriended each other very quickly. Fatimzzahara (Fatima) was also very helpful, especially when we went on the camping trip, she did a great job looking after 20 volunteers and was always friendly and eager to help. Rachid was too very helpful, when we missed our cab to the street kids centre he took us there, he was very friendly too. Also Amina, the cleaner was really funny, always joking around with us. I found that all the staff in Marrakech Open Hands, were all great people and I thoroughly enjoyed my experience with these people.
What were your impressions of the accommodation?
Much better than I expected, very clean thanks to Amina!
Why did you want to volunteer?
I wished to help others and get away, it was something I have wanted to do for ages, great introduction to the world of travelling and volunteering.
Do you feel you made a difference, how?
I feel I did, I helped out a lot, feeding, playing and teaching the kids.
What did you do for fun?
Played with the street kids, and messed about with other volunteers.
When was your most enjoyable experience, do you have an interesting story?
The best thing for me was taking the street kids swimming, having 50 screamingly happy children running around having the time of their lives was really rewarding and they loved all of our attention. However, it was heart breaking knowing that these awesome kids would be sleeping on the streets that same night. This project is really important!
Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
We made a little click of 9, we all just got on so well, loved everyone I met, I have already met up with one the people I met out there and stopped at their house. I will certainly be meeting up with a few others soon too! It was great because a few people I just seemed to be so similar to and we all go to know each other very quickly.
What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise
Waterfalls were amazing! And so was the Sahara. Definitely would say go to Casablanca, just to see the mosque though, and maybe visit the beach (on your free days).
Would you considering going again or perhaps to another project with Original Volunteers?
I’d love to go back, I think will at some point, I would certainly go back with Original Volunteers
What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
Stuff for the kids, CLOTHES, TOYS. Also I took UV face paints and they loved that so take as much as that as you can!
How much money would you suggest you take per week?
About £100, but you could do it way cheaper!
Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
