Volunteers

Ciara Cartin Morocco

What members of staff do you remember the most and why? Rashid, it seemed as though he was running the whole thing. He was on call for absolutely everything, every single hour of the day.

What were your impressions of the accommodation?
We were extremely fortunate to stay in a riad – privately owned, rented by OV. Swimming pool, lovely roof sun loungers etc and air conditioning / ensuite. Extremely impressed.

Why did you want to volunteer?
I wanted to volunteer because I am on a teaching degree, and I thought I would acquire valuable experience. My degree also incorporates French so Morocco was ideal.

What did you do for fun?
Ate out. Visited Djeema el fna main square. Did the city tour bus. Went to El Jadida, Went to the Cascases d’ouzoud.

Who did you make friends with and for what reasons?
Made friends with some lovely people in my riad. I had a friend out there at the same time as well, so i became friendly with people in her riad.

What were the names of the best places to hang out and socialise
Really enjoyed Cafe Arabe, and generally going around the souks. The main square was breathtaking in the evening as well. Recommend the waterfalls and El Jadida

What would you say/recommend to a friend who was interested in volunteering?
I would highly recommend it because it is an incredible experience. I would certainly recommend it to anyone.

What items would you suggest future volunteers pack?
Light clothing, although I took more cover-up clothes there are many remarks from when whether you’re covered head to toe or not.
Take snacks from home especially microwave meals because I sorely missed ‘normal’ food i was used to.

How much money would you suggest you take per week?
I recommend at least 600 dirhams per week. Meals out can sometimes be costly.

Could you offer any tips to future volunteers?
I highly recommend a small over shoulder small bag. I took only a rucksack and had to buy a small bag out there.
